Before the war, Alina Shynkar’s gynecologist advised her to avoid stress during her pregnancy and suggested that she spend time “watching cartoons and not doing much.” It was a pretty simple tip, but it wasn’t so easy to follow after the sirens of air strikes sounded, artillery blasts rattled windows, and fierce street fighting broke out a few kilometers from her maternity clinic. So, staying calm for the sake of her baby became Shynkar’s personal and silent battle in the Ukrainian war. Before the war began in late February, Shynkar was admitted to Maternity Hospital No. 5 in the capital, Kiev, to rest due to the risk of premature birth, but weeks later he witnessed the hospital plunge into a state of chaos and panic.“The girls were so stressed that they started giving birth” prematurely, she said. Doctors at his hospital took frightened pregnant women, some of them already in labor, into and out of a bomb shelter several times a day. Some were crying and others were bleeding.“They were frightened,” Shynkar recalled. “It was hard to see.”Dalina Levendarrenko, embarazada de gemelos, durante una revisión justo antes de que sonaran las sirenas antiaéreas en el Hospital de MaternidadAnna, de 37 años, fue consolada por su pareja, Yuri, mientras él cronometraba sus contracciones en el refugio del sótano del hospitalThe Russian invasion of Ukraine has been a nightmare for expectant mothers, especially in cities such as Mariupol, Kharcov and Chernigov, which have been subjected to almost constant bombardment since the beginning of the war.Last month, in the besieged city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine, Russian artillery hit a maternity hospital, resulting in the death of a pregnant woman and wounding other pregnant women, according to Ukrainian authorities.Women in war zones across the country have been forced to give birth in cold, dilapidated basements or subway stations crowded with people protecting themselves from shelling, and without electricity, running water or midwives to assist them. And the recent respite from the withdrawal of Russian forces will not do much good in many places. By the end of March, Russian missiles, bombs and artillery had destroyed at least 23 hospitals and health centers.Even pregnant women who have been lucky enough to escape war-torn areas have not been able to avoid stress, either because they have had to hurry in and out of shelters or because they had to undertake arduous and dangerous journeys to the relative security of western Ukraine or to neighbouring European countries. “Intento concentrarme en el bebé”, dijoAn estimated 265,000 Ukrainian women were pregnant when the war broke out, according to the United Nations Population Fund, the organization’s sexual and reproductive health agency. Some 80,000 births are expected in the next three months.War poses immediate and long-term risks to mothers, fathers and newborns. Among them are premature births, which can lead to a number of immediate and subsequent complications.“Because of the conditions of war, premature motherhood predisposes the baby to death or complications for the rest of his life,” said Jeanne Conry, president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics. Although data are not yet available, she said that Ukrainian doctors report an increase in the number of births of premature babies, who are more likely to have respiratory, neurological and digestive problems in the future.Conry said lack of access to medicines to prevent postpartum hemorrhage could lead to an increase in maternal deaths. Babies are at risk, she said, because doctors may not have immediate access to the equipment needed to resuscitate them, and they only have a few moments to get them to breathe for the first time after birth. When the siren of an air raid sounded a recent day in the hospital, the staircase was filled with women from the maternity ward who grabbed their bellies and dragged their feet down to the shelter, a labyrinth with low ceilings and warehouses. One of the rooms became an improvised room for post-operative observation and neonatology. Another, still crammed with filing cabinets, became a delivery room. The women lay on mats on the floor. Olena Yarushchuk, Deputy Head of Maternity Hospital No. 5, directed the women to the benches along the walls, where they sat almost silently in the barely lit space, waiting the few minutes for the imminent danger to pass.Yarushchuk said he had made video calls to assist women giving birth in the basements of apartment buildings in the Kiev suburb of Bucha, a few tens of kilometers away, but at that time, the suburb was cut off from the capital by the fighting.“Our work has changed,” he said.Yulia Sobchenko, 27, reported that she went into labor around midnight on March 20 and was taken to hospital by an ambulance. But Ukrainian soldiers at checkpoints delayed their arrival and, afraid of the terrorists, insisted on opening the door of the ambulance to verify that it was a woman who was going to give birth. Her son was born at 2:55 in the morning, and after two hours she was taken to the basement by an air raid alert. “I, in my nightgown and with a cloth between my legs and a tiny newborn baby, and my husband with all our bags, had to go to the basement,” she said. His son, Mykhailo, was born healthy and weighed 2 and a half kilos, he said, and “he is a child of war.”Se calcula que 265.000 mujeres ucranianas estaban embarazadas cuando estalló la guerra, según el Fondo de Población de las Naciones UnidasEl hospital permite que las mujeres, sus maridos e hijos se registren tres semanas antes de la fecha del parto para evitar que se separen del hospital por el cambio de frenteAfter birth, these families face other problems. New mothers who recently left Maternity Hospital No. 5 have said that they cannot breastfeed, something Yarushchuk attributed to stress.Finding calm was the strategy of Shynkar, who worked as an event organizer before the war. Her maternity hospital in Kiev allows women, husbands and children to be admitted three weeks before their due date to prevent them from being separated from the medical facility due to changes on the war front. From her hospital room, a few days before giving birth on March 25, the woman smiled broadly and looked so calm that she didn’t seem to notice the whirlwind of lethal violence outside. He said he hadn’t seen or read any news about the war. I try to focus on the baby,” he said. “Can I help fight the war? I want to, but I can’t, not now. But I can’t panic,” he said. “I can stay safe. That’s what I can do.”Shynkar gave birth to a girl, Adeline. “It was a natural birth in a very pleasant and intimate environment,” she said of her delivery in the hospital. “My husband was present and cut the umbilical cord. To be honest, I have no idea if there were air raid sirens because I was completely immersed in the process.”It was a small personal victory in the midst of a much larger battle being fought around him. Both for her and for her country, she gave her baby Victoria’s middle name.© The New York Times 2022KEEP READING:The Russian military entered the Red Forest without any precautions, the most polluted area of ChernobylIn photos: Kiev region after the brutal passage of Russian troopsBoris Johnson traveled to Kiev, met with Zelensky and offered armored vehicles and anti-ship missiles

REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesNATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg confessed that the Atlantic Alliance is considering deploying a permanent military presence in eastern Europe to repel a possible Russian invasion.“Regardless of when, how the war in Ukraine ends, the war has already had long-term consequences for our security. NATO needs to adapt to this new reality. And that is exactly what we are doing,” Stoltenberg explained in an interview with the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’.The Atlantic Alliance, as its secretary general assured, is “in the midst of a very fundamental transformation” that will make decisions on a permanent deployment at the NATO summit to be held in Madrid in June.“NATO is the most successful alliance in history for two reasons. One is that we were able to unite Europe and North America. The other is that we have been able to change when the world is changing. Now the world is changing and NATO is changing,” he said.La OTAN estudia desplegar una presencia militar permanente en el este de EuropaREUTERSSince the beginning of the invasion on February 24, NATO has deployed 40,000 soldiers on its eastern flank, which stretches from the Baltic to the Black Sea.FINLAND’S ENTRYA coalition partner in the Finnish Government who has traditionally been against accession to NATO signaled Saturday its openness to accession, thus clearing the way for Helsinki to become a member of the Atlantic Alliance. The Finnish Centre Party held a vote on security policy on Saturday, in which the party council granted the authority to approve an application for NATO membership. “If the Government believes that the pace and timing are right, then I, as president of the Centre Party, with your support, am prepared to set the course for Finland’s accession to the NATO defense alliance,” said party president Annika Saarikko.Finland has long resisted the option of membership in NATO, but the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed views in a country that shares a long border with Russia. Recent surveys show that most Finns now support membership, according to the agency DPA.The Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, has not expressed her opinion, but has made it clear that the decision “must be taken soon”. On Saturday he stated in Yle that, as the security situation could worsen, the decision must be taken this spring, that is, in mid-June.(With information from Europa Press)KEEP READING:In photos: Kiev region after the brutal passage of Russian troopsBoris Johnson traveled to Kiev, met with Zelensky and offered armored vehicles and anti-ship missilesMore casualties for Putin: Russian spies are being expelled en masse from the WestZelensky called on the allied countries to immediately apply more painful restrictions on Russian oil and gas

Japan’s Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Koichi Hagiuda speaks at a news conference in Tokyo, Japan, September 16, 2020. REUTERS/Kim Kyung-HoonJapan has decided to gradually reduce its imports of Russian coal, the government said Friday, in a coordinated move with the world’s largest economic powers to tighten sanctions on Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine.“We are going to move towards a cessation of imports” of Russian coal, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Koichi Hagiuda told a press conference today. The decision comes a day after the leaders of the G7 countries, including Japan, released a joint statement promising new sanctions against Russia that includes an embargo on the import of Russian coal, in light of alleged crimes against civilians committed by Russian troops in Ukraine.Hagiuda noted, however, that given the country’s dependence on this energy source, the reduction will be gradual to ensure a stable supply in the territory and avoid the abrupt impact that would cause an immediate total cessation.“We will look for alternative countries while we gradually reduce,” the minister said of these imports from Russia.Twelve per cent of Japanese coal imports destined for its thermal power plants currently come from Russia.“The measures agreed (by the G7) will be carried out according to the situation in each country and according to the energy security of each country,” said government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno, adding that Japan could direct its energy diversification to sectors such as “renewable and nuclear”.Un empleado del servicio funerario mira los cuerpos de los civiles, recogidos de las calles al cementerio local, mientras continúa el ataque de Rusia contra UcraniaREUTERSThe Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has already pointed out the potential imposition of individual Japanese sanctions on Russia on the eve and plans to hold a press conference in the coming hours in which he is expected to give more details on them. For its part, the United States announced on Wednesday a total blockade of the two major Russian banks, thus intensifying the country’s financial bloc in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine and the recent massacres reported in that country.“I made it clear that Russia would pay a severe and immediate price for its atrocities in Bucha. Today, together with our allies and partners, we are announcing a new round of devastating sanctions,” President Joe Biden said on Twitter.A senior government official explained in a call with journalists the “total blockade” of Sberbank and Alfa Bank, the country’s largest financial institutions: the measures prohibit their assets from coming into contact with the US financial system and prevent Americans from doing business with both institutions. In a statement, Sberbank replied that sanctions would not have a significant effect on its operations, having adapted to previous measures.(With information from EFE)KEEP READING:The United States and the United Kingdom announced harsh sanctions against Russia after the Bucha massacreThe United States sanctioned two of Vladimir Putin’s daughtersThe US sanctioned Russian tech companies, including the largest manufacturer of microchips

SENSITIVE MATERIAL. THIS IMAGE MAY OFFEND OR DISTURB A body of a civilian, who according to residents was killed by Russian army soldiers, lies on the street next to a bicycle, amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in Bucha, in Kyiv region, Ukraine April 2, 2022. REUTERS/Zohra BensemraLast Saturday, images of major international information agencies such as Reuters, AP and AFP began to circulate – first on social media and then on the services of major international information agencies such as Reuters, AP and AFP dozens of bodies of civilians abandoned in the streets of Bucha, a city on the outskirts of the capitalAll civilians, mostly men, the bodies lay on the tracks, on top of their cars, stuck on bicycles… AFP even testifies that there were bodies of civilians executed with their hands tied behind their backs. The international community quickly condemned summary executions and described them as war crimes. For its part, Volodymir Zelensky’s government demanded tougher sanctions to stop Moscow’s atrocities and gave chilling details of the massacres. Now, Nexta disseminated the version that the Kremlin is trying to impose on Russia, using its control of the local media. This is a video recorded from a Russian tank touring Bucha. The images show the bodies on both sides of the road and the military account of the events is heard. At one point, the military man says, “The corpse on the right moves his hand.” However, if the image is enlarged and viewed in slow motion, what is seen is not the right hand of the body rising, but the reflection of a light. With this video Russia tries to install the idea that Ukraine is putting on a show, that there are no such deaths. The narrative is easily detachable, prestigious international media such as the AFP agencies, Reuters and AP were there. They saw through the eyes of their photographers and journalists the lifeless bodies of all those Ukrainian civilians who did not die of natural causes, were executed in a practice prohibited by international law. In addition, Serhii Kaplychny, the chief of the local lifeguards, reported the discovery of two mass graves with civilian remains. One yesterday with 280 bodies and another today with another 75 bodies. Hay cadáveres atrapados en autos (Reuters)
“All these people were shot,” Bucha Mayor Anatoly Fedoruk told AFP. “These are the consequences of the Russian occupation,” he lamented.Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia and its soldiers of “deliberate massacre” and said that Moscow wants to “eliminate as many Ukrainians as they can.”Un cuerpo yace en la calle en la frontera entre Bucha e Irpin (Reuters)
This was done deliberately by Russia,” a counselor in the Ukrainian presidency, Mikhailo Podoliak, tweeted on his side. The International Criminal Court recently opened an investigation into possible war crimes committed in Ukraine, and some Western leaders, including US President Joe Biden, called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”El cuerpo de una mujer tendido en la calle (REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra)Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also accused Russian soldiers of planting mines and other traps as they withdrew from northern Ukraine. “They are leaving behind a complete disaster and many dangers (…) First, air strikes could continue.

POLITICA INTERNACIONAL
Dmitry Azarov
Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s words about the intervention of third countries in the invasion did not refer to nuclear weapons and that no one is thinking of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.“Any outcome of the operation, of course, is no reason for the use of a nuclear weapon. We have a concept of security that states very clearly that only when there is a threat to the existence of the state in our country, can we and will actually use nuclear weapons to eliminate the threat,” he explained. Thus, given the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the event of a third actor getting involved, Peskov has made it clear in an interview on the PBS television network that he “does not believe” that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, was referring, in his words, to the use of nuclear weapons. In particular, Peskov referred to the speech given by the Russian president when he announced the invasion of Ukraine in the Donbas region, in which he warned “different states not to interfere in Ukraine-Russian affairs during the operation”.“No one is thinking about using (or) even the idea of using nuclear weapons,” he said, adding that Putin was “quite bold” in saying (to third parties) “don’t interfere,” because, in the case of doing so, “we have every chance to prevent and punish” everyone who is going to do so.Vladimir PutinPeskov emphasized that Western countries have declared a total economic war against Russia. “We have to adapt to the new conditions. And, unfortunately, those conditions are rather unfriendly,” he said of the sanctions imposed on Russia. In this context, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov threatened on Monday that Russia will not provide gas “for charity” to “hostile” countries that do not want to pay it in rubles. Peskov acknowledged that the gas supply process is “very complicated” and indicated that Moscow is still evaluating the details of this supply after revealing its plans to require payment for raw materials in rubles for countries that have imposed sanctions in retaliation against the invasion of Ukraine. While it has not advanced possible measures against countries that do not want to pay in Russian currency, it has assured that Russia will “definitely” not provide gas to Europe “for free”. “That’s for sure,” he said, remarking that “it is difficult to commit to charity” in the current situation of the Eurasian country, according to the Russian news agency TASS.For their part, the G7 countries expressed their rejection of Russia’s intention on Monday and considered the imposition to be “unacceptable”. Putin expressed his intention to change the currency of payment for gas last week, although he assured that Russia will continue to supply gas in accordance with established volumes and prices.(With information from Europa Press)KEEP READING:Russia included the German network Deutsche Welle in its list of censored mediaThe Ukrainian Foreign Minister ruled out talking to Russia about a referendum in the Istanbul negotiationsUkraine shot down 17 Russian air targets

British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss arrives at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 21, 2021. REUTERS/Evelyn HocksteinBritish Foreign Minister Elizabeth Truss on Sunday condemned the “kidnapping and deportation” of Ukrainians from the besieged city of Mariupol, to a measure that has been compared by Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky to Nazi Germany.Mariupol City Council assured Saturday that Russian troops would be evacuating residents of the city into Russian territory and taken to concentration camps against their will.Truss was “horrified” by these reports and promised that Russian President Vladimir Putin will “be held accountable” for the treatment he is “giving” to civilians during the invasion of Ukraine, as he explained on his Twitter account.“I am appalled by the Russian atrocities in Mariupol, including the attacks on schools housing civilians and the abduction and deportation of Ukrainians (…) Putin and his regime will be held accountable,” said the UK Foreign Minister.Mariupol has been under constant heavy fire since the beginning of the Russian invasion on 24 February. The city has become one of the hardest hit by Russian forces in recent days, to the point that on March 14 the Ukrainian authorities reported that more than 2,500 people had died in the area.Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden will travel to Poland on Friday to talk to his partner Andrzej Duda about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the White House said Sunday.“The president will discuss how the United States responds together with our allies and partners to the humanitarian and human rights crisis that Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked war against Ukraine has created,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. The visit to Poland will follow a stopover in Belgium to meet with the leaders of NATO, the G7 and the European Union (EU).Rescue teams evacuating wounded in the city of Mariupol“The trip will focus on continuing to bring the world together to support the Ukrainian people and against President (Vladimir) Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” Psaki added.“But there are no plans to travel to Ukraine,” he clarified.Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki traveled last week with his Czech and Slovenian counterparts to Kiev, the besieged Ukrainian capital, to reaffirm the EU’s “unequivocal support”.US Vice President Kamala Harris also met with Duda in Warsaw earlier this month and both condemned Russia’s military action, especially against civilians. That meeting came shortly after Washington rejected a Polish offer to send MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine via a US airbase, claiming that this raised “serious concerns” for the whole of NATO.(With information from Europa Press)KEEP READING:Germany closed an energy deal with Qatar to reduce its dependence on Russian gasThe US questioned the Russian regime’s willingness to reach an agreement with Ukraine: “Negotiations seem to be unilateral”A former advisor to Boris Yeltsin accused Vladimir Putin of having turned Russia into North Korea after the invasion of Ukraine
